Prevention, Education and Eye Health for All
Beyond its role as a healthcare center, African Sight Center (ASC) is developing a comprehensive public health strategy focused on prevention. This approach aims to act before disease develops by raising awareness, improving access to information, and promoting good practices for eye health and protection.
Eye diseases can progress silently and lead to irreversible damage. Prevention is therefore essential to preserving vision and improving quality of life in the long term.
An Active Presence in the Community
ASC teams work directly within local communities to organize eye health prevention initiatives. These activities take different forms, adapted to local needs and circumstances:
- screening campaigns in rural and peri-urban areas,
- outreach programs in schools to raise awareness among children and teachers,
- information campaigns targeting at-risk populations (people with diabetes, hypertension, or age-related conditions),
- free or low-cost eye examination days.
These initiatives help identify visual problems at an early stage, refer patients for appropriate care, and reduce the risk of preventable complications.
Raising Awareness to Improve Prevention
Health education is at the heart of ASC’s mission. Our teams develop simple, accessible educational materials to share essential information:
- recognizing the warning signs of eye diseases,
- adopting good habits to protect vision on a daily basis,
- understanding the importance of regular eye examinations, even in the absence of symptoms,
- challenging misconceptions and reducing risky practices.
This approach aims to empower everyone to take an active role in protecting their own eye health.
Coordinated Action with Local Partners
ASC carries out its initiatives in collaboration with local organizations and stakeholders:
- schools and educational institutions,
- health centers and clinics,
- associations and NGOs,
- regional health authorities.
This coordinated approach helps maximize the impact of prevention initiatives, ensure continuity of care, and reach a wider population.
